Unfinished Cabinets - The Ultimate DIY Project

What makes something the ultimate DIY project? Two things: accessibility and impact. Replacing your existing cabinet doors with unfinished cabinet doors meets both criteria. Compared to the expense of an entire kitchen remodel, replacing just the doors costs a modest amount, and you can handle the finishing and door hanging without hiring a contractor. This is the kind of DIY project anyone can excel at. But even more exciting is the finished product. Your kitchen will look totally transformed even though you’ve only replaced one element and done all the work yourself. If you want to give your kitchen a big lift on a small budget in a short schedule, definitely consider all you can do with our unfinished cabinets.

What are Unfinished Kitchen Cabinets?

The term “finish” refers to the finish layer applied to the outside of a cabinet and cabinet doors. Finish options include sealing, staining, and painting. Unfinished wood cabinets come ready for you to apply the finish option of your choice. The wood has already been fully sanded, meaning it’s ready for you to follow the application instructions included with whatever finish you select. Otherwise, unfinished cabinets are exactly like any other option on the market in terms of strength, quality, and craftsmanship. To put it differently, you don’t compromise anything by choosing cheap unfinished kitchen cabinets. Most people - homeowners, designers, and contractors alike - consider this the smartest option available.

Benefits of Unfinished Cabinet Doors

Imagine you're interested in shaker style cabinets. Why choose unfinished shaker cabinets instead of an option with paint, stain, or seal already applied? There are lots of good reasons:

  • Cost - Unfinished cabinets will always cost less than the finished equivalents. They’re the most economical way to get the look you want. Plus, finishing them yourself costs less than paying a professional to do it (but that remains an option). With unfinished doors, you can significantly upgrade the look and feel of a space without straining your budget.
  • Choice - There are literally thousands of ways to finish cabinet doors. Since your doors arrive unfinished, you’re free to choose whatever finish you like instead of selecting from whatever the door producer provides. You also get to choose when the doors get finished and hung up instead of waiting for a contractor to fit you in. Using unfinished kitchen cabinet doors makes the project run on your terms.
  • Creativity - Finishing your own cabinet doors is a fun and straightforward DIY project that a lot of people enjoy. It’s both an interesting introduction to some of the principles of woodworking, and something you can do with the kids. If it sounds like a chore, leave it up to someone else. But if you get excited by the opportunity to leave your mark on your home, you will probably take pride in seeing your own handiwork on your cabinets every day.

How can you recognize Top Quality when shopping Unfinished Cabinet Doors online?

The large cabinet door manufacturing companies make and supply new cabinet doors to the home building and furniture industry. These are the volume buyers of cabinet doors and they buy the doors unfinished.

There is a significant difference in quality between the large and small manufacturers of cabinet doors that is mostly attributed to economies-of-scale and investment in computerized machinery. The larger manufacturers are able to demand higher quality raw materials because of their purchasing power while smaller manufacturers just don't spend enough. Computerized machinery investment results in exacting sizing tolerances and sanding processes that produce consistently stain-ready products. Modern computerized machinery, with multi-million dollar investments, is simply beyond the means of smaller manufacturers.

The Internet has made it possible for the DIY home-owner to purchase cabinet doors without buying from a retail chain, but the Internet has also removed the quality assurance that the Retail chain has in place. A flashy website doesn't guarantee a quality cabinet door, and most large cabinet door manufacturers don't have flashy websites. In fact, most of the flashy websites don't even make the doors they sell. They are just middlemen that forward web orders to manufacturers and collect a commission on the sale.

Western Cabinet Doors, Inc is one of the largest manufacturers of cabinet doors in the United States with modern machinery and the buying power to demand high quality raw materials. In the 1996 they launched www.cabinetdoors.com where DIY home-owners could purchase top-quality online with factory-direct pricing.

In 1996 cabinetdoors.com was the only website offering cabinet doors. Today there are hundreds of sites, but most don't actually make doors. Many buy doors from us and some even buy doors from other sites that buy from us. As you can imagine, the more middlemen in the chain, the higher the price to the end user.

Do your research on the internet and compare prices with cabinetdoors.com. Not only will cabinetdoors.com ship you the highest quality available, you will also pay a lower price. Delivery is a consideration also. We have a manufacturing time of seven-to-tan days and shipping is Fedex.

Take the guesswork out of your DIY project. Use the highest quality doors from the highest rated manufacturer on the web. Cabinetdoors.com has a Better Business Bureau rating of A+ and a 97% customer approval rating.

The Door Stop - Tons of Styles in the Perfect Size

The internet has made it possible to find sources for the do-it-yourself remodeler to buy unfinished cabinet doors in any sizes, and do the finishing yourself.

The majority of Cabinet Door Websites don't actually make the doors they sell. They take your order and then buy your doors from an actual manufacturer. That middleman type of operation is being replaced by actual manufacturers offering their products factory-direct on the internet.

Because the Custom Cabinet Shops and Home Builders want to offer unlimited color options, they always do the final finishing themselves. So, unfinished doors are what the large manufacturers offer.

That gives the do-it-yourself remodeler an opportunity to save about 50% by finishing the cabinet doors himself.

Way back in the mid 1990's Western Cabinet Doors, Inc launched the first website offering custom sized unfinished cabinet doors on the internet. Western Cabinet Doors is a large manufacturer of Cabinet Doors, supplying hundreds of styles of doors to thousands of Home Builders, Custom Cabinet Shops, and Furniture Manufactures across the United States.

Today you can purchase their products on CabinetDoors.Com and choose from hundreds of door styles in dozens of wood types. You can browse all the cabinet door possibilities and price your new doors by entering your custom sizes and choosing your wood. Even the cost of Fedex shipping to your home is shown before you enter your credit card.

Compare the prices of other websites and the big-box stores to ours. Not only will you save 30% to 50% but you will get the same quality and guarantee we supply to luxury home builders across the country.

Our quality is superior, our product is made in the United States, and our production time is between 7-and-10 days.

Whether you want traditional cabinet doors, mitered doors, arched doors, or specialty doors, we make the largest selection in the industry and we have been supplying thousands of users for over 38 years.

Cabinetdoors.com is not just a website re-marketing cabinet doors, we are the manufacturer and we stand behind our product.

What to Do With Custom Unfinished Cabinet Doors?

If you want to have custom cabinet doors made you obviously have an eye for design and style. Buying unfinished doors is an appealing option for people like you because you have complete control over how you finish the doors and what the final product looks like. Keep these options in mind:

  • Paint - Unfinished cabinet doors Unfinished paint grade cabinet doors are ready for you to paint any color of the rainbow. There are literally thousands of options to choose from. Plus, painting your own doors is a relatively quick, easy, and inexpensive way to make them fit perfectly into your design scheme.
  • Stain - Staining gives the surface of your doors a distinctive color while preserving the rich look of the wood grain. Again, there are tons of color options to choose from and the application process is fairly straightforward, even if you have never applied stain before.
  • Distressed - When you distress wood you intentionally but carefully damage the surface to give it character and a lived-in quality. This look is great for spaces meant to feel cozy or rustic. Distressing wood is a little trickier than the other techniques, and it may not be appropriate for all spaces, but it's still an option worth considering.

Are Unfinished Cabinet Doors Right For Me?

The answer is different for everyone. Ask yourself these questions before you decide which doors to order:

  • Do You Want a Project? - Unfinished doors take a little extra work on your part. You get advantages as a result (lower cost, more finish options), but you need to be able to handle the project. If you would rather make things easy on yourself, consider ordering prefinished cabinet doors instead.
  • Do You Have a Color Picked Out? - Prefinished cabinet doors are available in multiple paint colors or a clear conversion varnish. If you know exactly what kind of finish you want, your best bet is to order the doors unfinished and apply it yourself.
  • Do You Have Enough Time? - Once your custom unfinished cabinet doors arrive it will take some time before they're ready to hang. Depending on how you finish them it could take a couple of days before the surface is completely cured and the doors are ready to hang. If your goal is to get the new doors in place as quickly as possible, prefinished doors are ready to hang as soon as you receive them.

This was my 4th kitchen re-model with your cabinet doors and, just like before, the doors were perfect. The workmanship is top notch and the sanding was exceptional. My 5th kitchen job is scheduled for August and I'll be ordering from you again. You make a great door.Kent's Kitchens

We ordered replacement doors for our 60-year-old home and were very pleased with the product. The milling was of the highest quality. The joinery was very well done, and the wood selection was obviously done by a professional who cares what the finished product looks like. It is one thing to assemble a project with technical skill, and another thing entirely to accomplish the assembly with an eye toward bringing the best out of the wood being used. Both aspects were accomplished, and at a very high level! The dimensions were absolutely perfect. Each door was correctly dimensioned to within less than 1/16 of an inch. It was very pleasing to see this attention to detail, especially since I took the time to measure my cabinets twice, making sure I had done my part. I had never worked with white birch before, and when I saw the issues with staining the wood (soft grain with blotchy absorption of the stain) I was a bit worried. I had no problems at all because the wood was of a higher quality white birch that had been properly handled at the mill and sanded to a stain-ready finish. A good sanding sealer was applied, and then the stain. The results were EXCELLENT! All-in-all, we received a great product, great advice and excellent customer service from CabinetDoors.com. We would certainly recommend them to anyone looking for cabinet doors. Nice job, everyone! Michael R.

The doors arrived today and fit perfectly. Thank you very much. I will be ordering the remaining 18 doors and 6 drawer fronts in the next couple of months. Walter W.

So glad we remodeled our kitchen with your doors, instead of doors from the hardware chain. You saved us over 35%. The doors arrived in 12 days, (including 4 Fedex shipping days). The hardware chain quoted 28 days, and your quality is far better than their samples. Mark H.

These doors are EXCELLENT! In quality and workmanship and value. Very glad we found you. James L.
