What You Need To Know About Replacement Cabinet Doors

Replacement cabinet door

If you're looking for replacement cabinet doors as you're considering replacing your cabinet doors, here are a few great tips that'll make the process go more smoothly and save you money too!

Step 1: Choose Replacement Cabinet Doors

First you'll want to browse through the hundreds of styles of replacement cabinet doors on this site for the replacement cabinet doors that fit your home and style best. This is also a good time to make decisions about more than just style but which wood variety you'd like. If you're considering painting your cabinet doors and if you'll be interested in any options for glass ready cabinet doors. Popular modern replacement cabinet door options are between the traditional Cope and Stick style and the newer Mitered styles of cabinet door joinery. The biggest difference for the consumer between the two is the angle of the joints at the 4 corners of the cabinet doors. In a cope and stick joint the top and bottom rails fit flush into the sides. A mitered joint is made by two 45° cuts to make a diagonal joint at each of the cabinet door corners.

Both door styles come in dozens of designs and both styles are reliable and dependable in all climates across the United States.

Step 2: Decide If You'll Re-use Hinges

Decide if you intend to re-use your existing hinges or upgrade to newer style concealed hinges. This has an affect on which measurements you need to place your order. A good practice here is to consider the condition and appearance of your existing hinges. Older styles of hinges are visible when your doors are closed. This means that they must fit into the style of your kitchen. Modern concealed hinges are hidden when the doors are closed and all you see is the surface of the door and cabinetry.

Step 3: Measure For Replacement Cabinet Doors

The next step is measuring the size or sizes of cabinet doors you need. This step varies based on if you have decided to reuse your old hinges or if you've decided to order doors to be used with concealed hinges.

  • If you plan to reuse your existing hinges sizing your new doors is easy. Simply measure your existing doors and order new doors of the same sizes.
  • If you plan to order and install concealed hinges (with 1/2-inch overlay) measure the cabinet opening size instead of the doors.

Hinges designed for 1/2-inch overlay (the most common) require doors to "overlay" the cabinet opening by 1/2-inch in each direction. That means the door will be 1-inch larger than the cabinet opening in both width and height.

For cabinets with "butt doors", that is cabinet openings that have two doors butting against each other, the door size calculation is different.

For the door height, the calculation is the same as for single door cabinet openings: simply measure the opening height and add 1-inch. Door width for 2-door cabinet openings are calculated by measure the opening width, adding 1-inch, then dividing by 2. This will give the size for each door. The concealed hinge has an adjustment of about 1/16-inch so the doors will close without touching. Some cabinet makers want slightly more door spacing and will subtract an additional 1/16-inch from the door width calculation.

Step 4: Place Your Replacement Cabinet Door Order

The final step after you've chose your doors, decided on hinges, and measured is placing your replacement cabinet door order. On the page for your favorite style of cabinet door simply choose your wood species, if you want your doors drilled for concealed hinges, if you want us to supply the hinges, list the width and height for each door size, and the quantity you need. If you have multiple sizes of cabinet doors submit those sizes separately and add them to your cart. If you have any questions about ordering please give us a call at 800-342-1010 or view our "How To Order Page".

We ordered replacement doors for our 60-year-old home and were very pleased with the product. The milling was of the highest quality. The joinery was very well done, and the wood selection was obviously done by a professional who cares what the finished product looks like. It is one thing to assemble a project with technical skill, and another thing entirely to accomplish the assembly with an eye toward bringing the best out of the wood being used. Both aspects were accomplished, and at a very high level! The dimensions were absolutely perfect. Each door was correctly dimensioned to within less than 1/16 of an inch. It was very pleasing to see this attention to detail, especially since I took the time to measure my cabinets twice, making sure I had done my part. I had never worked with white birch before, and when I saw the issues with staining the wood (soft grain with blotchy absorption of the stain) I was a bit worried. I had no problems at all because the wood was of a higher quality white birch that had been properly handled at the mill and sanded to a stain-ready finish. A good sanding sealer was applied, and then the stain. The results were EXCELLENT! All-in-all, we received a great product, great advice and excellent customer service from CabinetDoors.com. We would certainly recommend them to anyone looking for cabinet doors. Nice job, everyone! Michael R.

The doors arrived today and fit perfectly. Thank you very much. I will be ordering the remaining 18 doors and 6 drawer fronts in the next couple of months. Walter W.

These cabinet doors are PERFECT! Super high quality and right-on size. Harry D.

So glad we remodeled our kitchen with your doors, instead of doors from the hardware chain. You saved us over 35%. The doors arrived in 12 days, (including 4 Fedex shipping days). The hardware chain quoted 28 days, and your quality is far better than their samples. Mark H.

These doors are EXCELLENT! In quality and workmanship and value. Very glad we found you. James L.

A friend put me onto your website and I can't thank her enough. You make an excellent product and I'm completely happy with everything about my purchase. Paula B.

Very nice cabinet doors, the color matching and the sizes are right-on. Paul L.

Your customer service is fantastic. Somehow you spotted an error I made on my order (I reversed width and height on one door) and called me to ask if the size was correct. Your attention to detail prevented me from ordering one of my doors wrong. Thank you so much. Bryan E.
